Located 32 miles northwest of Chicago, is the affluent, suburban village of Barrington, IL. The Barrington area, which lies in both Lake and Cook counties and includes the additional towns of North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington, is the seventh wealthiest zip code in the United States among areas with a population of 20,000 or more. The area features wetlands, forest preserves, parks and horse trails in a country-suburban setting. The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Barrington as a Tree City USA every year since 1986.
The village of Barrington has the largest residential historic district in Illinois and is noted for its Victorian, Victorian Gothic, Queen Anne, and other popular late-19th century forms of architecture. The downtown area is home to the historic Catlow Theater, which features interiors by noted Prairie School sculptor and designer Alfonso Iannelli. The Catlow is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to operate as one of the few remaining single-screen theaters in the area. The Michael Bay 2010 re-make of A Nightmare on Elm Street was partially filmed in Barrington, using the village’s residential architecture as a backdrop.
